CASA LOMA WON'T GO UP FOR SALE, DECIDES CITY'S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Toronto’s historic Casa Loma will not be sold off to a private company.  Instead, the mayor’s executive committee members have endorsed a plan to look for an outside company to operate the tourist attraction.  City council still needs to endorse this plan.  The future of the 98-room Edwardian massion has been uncertain since last spring, when the city and the site’s operator, the Kiwanis Club, agreed to terminate a 20 year lease early.

Casa Loma was the expression of a dream by Sir Henry Pellatt, a wildly successful Toronto businessman in the early 1900’s.  He built Casa Loma  just south of St. Clair to display his wealth, but when his business forturnes reversed, the Castle on the hill was sold and today it’s run-down and in need of a lot of attention.

City councilllor Joe Mihevc represents the ward where Casa Loma is located.  He tells the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back, “philanthropic money will be attracted once a buzz is created around the historic site.  Then Torontonians can reclaim the site as ours.  It would be the same way we saved the AGO and the ROM.”  Mihevc says it’s important to protect public accessibility to Casa Loma and ensure that it is protected as a Toronto icon for generations to come.
