Possible contenders for Academy Awards emerged at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Silver Linings stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro. It was named audience favourite at TIFF. Ben Affleck’s Argo was a close runner-up.

Toronto audiences have proven to be pretty accurate at picking Oscar winners. Past Toronto picks The King’s Speech, Precious, and Slumdog Millionaire all went on to multiple Academy Award nominations and wins.

Three Canadian films also emerged as winners. Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways took the prize for best Canadian feature. Past winners at TIFF have gone on to become Canada’s entry in the foreign-language category at the Oscars.

Jason Buxton’s Blackbirds and Brandon Cronenberg’s Antiviral shared the award for best debut feature by a Canadian.
