At the age of 71, most opera singers have retired, or at least retired into familiar roles. Not Placido Domingo. The celebrated tenor and maestro recently debuted a new role in a rarely-produced Giuseppe Verdi opera, The Two Foscari. First produced in 1844 in Rome, it was written before Verdi’s classics such as Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata.
It’s the first production by a major US company in 40 years. Domingo has taken on the baritone role as he continues to settle into his lower register.
The Two Foscari is playing at the Los Angeles Opera, where Domingo is the General Director. He programmed it in the lead up to next year’s 200th anniverssary of Verdi’s birth.
