Many of Vincent van Gogh’s greatest masterpieces are moving across town.
Sunflowers, Irises, and Wheatfield with Crows normally make their home at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. But the museum is about to undergo extensive renovations. So 75 Van Gogh works are being moved to the Hermitage, an Amsterdam satellite of the Russian state museum.
The tricky process of transporting the artworks under police escort began immediately after the last visitors left the museum yesterday and carried on through the night into this morning. They had to be packed into hard-shell cases that are resistant to temperature changes and bumps.
The masterpieces will be on display at The Hermitage by Saturday. Then they will be returned to The Van Gogh Museum in time for its re-opening on April 25, 2013.
