Iringa, Toka, and Thika will spend another winter in Toronto.

The three aging elephants at the Toronto Zoo were scheduled to be moved to a sanctuary in California because of concerns about their health in our cold weather.

But the move is now on hold. Zoo officials say there are renewed concerns about infection in other animals at the PAWS sanctuary.

But Councillor Michelle Berardinetti says it’s another delaying tactic. Toronto City Council voted last fall to send the elephants to the sanctuary because of concerns about how our northern climate and the rocky terrain is affecting their health.
