The TTC has voted to increase fares by a nickel next year. It’s part of an attempt to make up a budget shortfall.
The other part is angering union workers. They disrupted the meeting yesterday when the TTC commissioners approved the fare increase, and voted to outsource the cleaning of transit buses.
Union President Bob Kinnear is threatening some sort of job action. The TTC is an essential service, so workers can’t strike. But Kinnear says they may not watch too closely to make sure riders are using the correct fare.
The fare increase will make up $18,000,000 of a projected $28,000,000 shortfall. The TTC is having to find the rest through “efficiencies” such as contracting out.
The fare increase will have to be approved by City Council.
