Americans Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka share this year’s top chemistry honour for their study of proteins that let cells in the body respond to signals from the outside.   The Royal Swedish Academy says the two have made groundbreaking discoveries about one important family of receptors in particular.  About half of all medications act on these specific receptors.  Learning more about them will allow researchers to come up with better drugs.

The Nobel Prizes were established in the 1895 will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. Each award  about 1.2 million dollars.
