Britain’s most prestigious literary prize will be announced today.
Hilary Mantel is favoured to win the $82,000 Booker Prize for Bring Up the Bodies. Her tale of Tudor treachery centred on Henry VIII’s right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell, is the second installment of a Cromwell trilogy. The first, Wolf Hall, won Mantel the Booker in 2009.
Britain’s Will Self is also considered a strong contender for his century-spanning stream of consciousness, Umbrella.
The other finalists are India’s Jeet Thayil for Narcopolis; Britain’s Alison Moore for The Lighthouse; Malaysia’s Tan Twan Eng for The Garden of Evening Mists; and Britain’s Deborah Levy for Swimming Home.
