Dalton McGuinty is resigning as Premier of Ontario.
McGuinty shocked his caucus last night with the announcement that he was going to step aside. McGuinty says, “it’s time for renewal. It’s time for the next Liberal Premier.”
McGuinty dropped a double bombshell. He is also proroguing the legislature until a new leader can be chosen. McGuinty says the government can’t negotiate a wage freeze with public sector workers in a minority government. He wants time to work out a deal.
As to his future, McGuinty wouldn’t speculate on whether he is considering taking a run at the leadership of the federal Liberal party.
