An update now on the meningitis outbreak in the U.S. which has mainly affected older Americans.  Health experts have now confirmed that a fungus has been found in unopened vials of steroid medication and is believed to be linked to the outbreak.

The Food and Drug Administration says the fungus was in one lot of vials made in August by the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Massachusetts.

The specialty pharmacy has been at the centre of a national investigation into more than 250 fungal meningitis cases, including at least 20 deaths.

Health officials said this week that 40 of 42 patients were infected with the fungus which is called “exserohilum rostratum.”
