US President Barrack Obama has declared a major disaster in New York and Long Island, where more than 7-million homes and businesses are without power in the northeastern part of the United States.
At least 17 deaths are being blamed on the storm that slammed into the New Jersey coastline last night with winds near 130 kilometres per hour.
The superstorm also hurled a four-metre surge of seawater at New York City, flooding tunnels, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street. The city’s subway system, stock exchange, and theatre district will remain closed today.
A backup generator failed to kick in at a major hospital in the city, forcing staff to move some 200 patients to other medical facilities. Many of the patients were being treated for cancer an other serious illnesses.
And there’s word a levee has broken in New Jersey, and three towns have been flooded with a metre and a half of water.
Storm damage was projected at 20 billion to 30 billion dollars — meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U-S history.
