While we’re in for a couple of more days of showers across Southern Ontario, the worst of superstorm Sandy has passed.  At it’s height, the storm left almost 150,000 hydro customers without power in Ontario, including 60,000 in Toronto.   Currently, 600 Toronto residents are still without electricity.  Another 7500 Ontario hydro customers are waiting for power, mainly in the Muskoka area as well as around Sarnia.  With the exception of one, all of the Toronto schools closed yesterday because of power outages, are reopening today.  A Catholic high school, James Cardinal McGuigan at Finch and Keele, remains closed today.

In the U.S., the death toll from Sandy has reached 50, while more than 8-million homes and businesses still have no electricity.  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has a meeting scheduled today with U.S. President Obama to talk about strategies and funding for clean up.

Sandy made landfall as a hurricane in New Jersey on  Monday evening.  In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says it could be several days before the city’s subway is running again.  All 10 of the city’s tunnels that carry passengers under the East River were flooded by the storm.  There is good news though.  Both JFK and Newark International Airports have reopened with limited service.  LaGuardia Airport remains closed because of flooding.
