A new alcohol awareness campaign called  Number and Size Matter focuses on education about Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines.

Jann Houston is with Toronto Public Health.

She says the new campaign is another tool to help make informed decisions about consuming alcohol  and reducing  long-term health risks associated with alcohol.

Research has shown that the amount of alcohol consumed is related to the risk of developing diseases including cancer, hypertension, epilepsy, stroke and liver cirrhosis.

According to Statistics Canada the per capita consumption of alcohol in Canada has risen by 14 per cent since 1996.

There’s more information about the campaign and drinking guidelines on-line at the City of Toronto’s website.
