A musical peace project is taking shape.
World renowned pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim has launched an academy of music for musicians from the Middle East.
Barenboim has already united Arab and Israeli musicians through his “West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.” which he co-founded with the late Palestinian literary scholar, Edward Said.
Barenboim now intends to expand the orchestra concept into higher education.
The conductor has announced plans for a conservatory in Berlin geared towards musicians from the Middle East – with training in music, social sciences and international politics.
It will be housed in a former warehouse for the Berlin State Opera, where Barenboim is artistic director.
The academy is due to open in 2015.
Star architect Frank Gehry has reportedly volunteered to design an 800-seat concert hall to be part of the facility.
