The Church of England’s general synod has rejected proposals to appoint women as bishops after it failed to win the backing of lay members.

Women already serve as Anglican bishops here in Canada as well as in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

But today’s vote needed to pass if the Church of England was to  enthrone women as Anglican bishops in England.

The decision comes at the end of a day of debate by supporters and opponents – and a 12-year legislative process.
