Mayor Rob Ford will find out this morning whether he gets to keep his ceremonial chain of office.
Ontario Superior Court Judge Charles Hackland will issue his ruling at 10:00 on whether Ford is guilty of conflict of interest in using city stationary to solicit funds for his football charity, and then taking part in the council debate on whether he should have to repay the money.
If Hackland finds Ford guilty, he can order him out of office and ban him from running again for up to seven years. He could also rule that it was an innocent mistake.
John Mascarin is an expert in municipal law. He says he doesn’t think the judge will let Ford off the hook. Ford claims he never read the conflict of interest act. But Mascarin says the Mayor has taken the oath of office several times, in which he would have had to swear to abide by the act.
If Ford is forced out of office, Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday will take over in the interim. But he thinks there should be a byelection to choose a new mayor.
