POLICE SERVICES BUDGET MEETING COULD BE STORMY

Today’s meeting of the Toronto police services board is expected to be a tense one.

They’ll be talking about next year’s police budget. Chief Bill Blair maintains he can’t operate his department on a budget freeze without pulling officers off the street. But the board wants him to do just that.

Police Services spokesman Mark Pugash says it’s now up to the Board to determine how to accomplish a zero-increase budget.

Board Chair Alok Mukherjee says the board is convinced savings can be found without reducing the number of front-line officers, by measures such as freezing promotions.

Mike McCormack is the President of the Toronto Police Association. He says the city already has fewer officers than it needs, and he’s prepared to launch a legal challenge if there are any more staff cuts because it’s becoming a safety issue.

The city wants all departments to work with the same amount of money next year.
