The province’s regional transportation agency is defending its Presto payment system.

Auditor General Jim McCarter says the cost of the Presto card for the Toronto and Hamilton region has tripled to $700-million. McCarter says that makes it one of the most expensive payment systems in the world.

McCarter says Presto is costing so much because GTA transit systems are behind in implementing it. Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig agrees the system is expensive. But he says it’s because it’s a very complex system to integrate.

Presto will go into use throughout the TTC by 2016. McCuaig says that’s crucial to making Presto a success.
