He wasn’t a household name by any means, but he was involved in the checkout of every product you buy off store shelves.  Norman Woodland, the co-inventor of the bar code, has passed away in New Jersey at the age of 91.

In 1952, Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver received a patent for their idea for a code based on Morse Code.

Instead of dots and dashes, their idea featured thick and thin bars.

The first product sold with a bar code was a 67-cent pack of chewing gum sold at a store in Troy, Ohio in June, 1974.
