C-A-W president Ken Lewenza says G-M’s decision to move production of the Camaro from Oshawa to Michigan is a “devastating shock” to the region.

General Motors Canada announced the move of the next version of the sports car today, citing lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies.

The current version of the Camaro is made at G-M’s Oshawa flex plant, which has about two-thousand workers and also produces the Buick Regal and Cadillac X-T-S.

The C-A-W’s most recent contract with G-M — ratified in September — guaranteed production of the Camaro in Oshawa only until the end of the current generation.

The union says the move will cut production in Oshawa by as much as one-third starting in late 2015 or early 2016.

Finance minister Jim Flaherty-who is also the Member of Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa says the union’s concern is unfounded.
