There’s about to be a shift in Broadway’s list of longevity.

At 8:00 this evening, the curtain will rise on the 6,681st performance of the revival of Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre. The musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb will become the third longest-running show in Broadway history, surpassing Les Miz which has now closed.

The revival of the Bob Fosse musical has been running for 16 years. It opened in 1996 with Ann Reinking, Bebe Neuwirth, and Joel Grey.

Chicago will have to run another two years to surpass Cats as the second longest-running show. It may never match to Phantom of the Opera, which plays its 10,356th performance tonight.
