The Toronto Board of Trade’s recommendation to levy a tax on drivers  to fund public transit expansion in the GTA is getting negative reaction from city councilor, Rob Ford.

Ford, who is the Mayor’s brother and close adviser,  says he prefers persuading  private investors to become involved through public-private partnerships.

Ford says for that to happen there has to be the political will.

He says he would consider imposing new taxes for transit expansion only after private investment options are exhausted.

The CAA’s , Elliott Silvertsein  says a one per-cent sales tax could coast the average motorist 500- dollars annually.
