Canada’s entry in the Academy Awards foreign-language category was the big winner at the Quebec Film Awards.

Rebelle or War Witch took several Jutra awards in Montreal last night, including best film.

Kim Nguyen was named Best Director for his work on Rebelle, while the film’s young performer, Rachel Mwanza, was named Best Actress.

The Jutra jury had a wide range of films to narrow down to short lists this year, including 241 short and medium-length fiction films, 32 feature films, 20 short and medium-length animated films, and 41 feature-length documentaries.

But 2012 was not kind to the Quebec film industry. Box office receipts slumped in the face of the increasing popularity of Imax films, 3D movies and online movie renting.
