The late Van Cliburn has received a posthumous honour. The recording of  his historical victory at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 1958 has been chosen for the National Registry of the US Library of Congress. The registry is design to preserve recordings of historical significance for future generations.

Cliburn died at the end of February.

The Registry has also added a legendary Broadway original cast album. The 1949 recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific became one of the best-selling  in history and alerted the music industry to the potential popularity of cast recordings.

In all, 25 recordings have been added to the National Registry.
