Ontario’s Premier has come out in support of the idea of dedicated tolls or taxes to pay for transit funding.
Kathleen Wynne says they’re the best way to pay for the major plans for solving gridlock in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area. She says there isn’t enough money in the provincial treasury to pay for an ambitious set of transit plans. And, without dedicated funding, the gridlock crisis will never be solved and future generations will be short-changed.
The regional transit agency, Metrolinx, has been tasked with drawing up a detailed strategy to pay for the $50-billion transit plan for the GTHA known as the “Big Move.” They will report to the government in the spring.
Wynne’s ideas are being endorsed by major business groups and Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion. But both opposition parties in the minority legislature are against the idea of tolls. So is Mayor Rob Ford.
