Financial analysts had expected the Waterloo-based company to report a loss in the 4th quarter.
Instead, it reported a profit of $98 million or 19 cents per share for quarter ended March 2, compared with a loss of $125 million or 24 cents per share a year ago.
However, the company’s subscriber base fell to about 76 million from 79 million in the previous quarter, a sign that more people ditched their older BlackBerrys.
The company says it shipped about one million Z10s in the quarter.
Blackberry also announced that co-founder Mike Lazaridis will retire as vice-chairman and director on May 1.
