There aren’t enough women in creative and content-creating roles in Canada’s TV production industry.

That’s the conclusion of a report written by Women in View. It’s a Toronto-based non-profit group dedicated to revitalizing the media industry by strengthening gender and cultural diversity.

The report examined 272 episodes from 21 Canadian television series, including Being Erica, Little Mosque on the Prairie, Rookie Blue, The Borgias, and Murdoch Mysteries.

It found only 16 per cent of the directors were women. And none of the series used female cinematographers.

Rina Fraticelli of Women in View says the study is meant to promote discussion of the issue, and says it will be a topic at upcoming forums in Toronto and Banff.

Women in View now plans to write annual reports because Canadians have not had consistent year-after-year data to track employment patterns.
