Ontario’s opposition parties accuse the Liberal government of breaking a promise to ensure all long-term care homes get a full inspection at least once a year.

Health Minister Deb Matthews says every long-term care home in the province is visited by an inspector at least once a year, and on average, there are 3.7 inspections per year per home.

However, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says Matthews is playing games with numbers and not being completely truthful about the types of inspections being carried out.

Horwath says only 123 of the 600 nursing homes in Ontario received a “resident quality inspection” from the Ministry of Health since 2010, even though the government promised each would be inspected at least once a year.

Progressive Conservative health critic Christine Elliott says long-term care homes are not being inspected as often as they should be, which she believes puts vulnerable seniors at risk.

However, Matthews says it’s important that the public who need to have confidence in the long-term care homes know that they are being inspected and that the standards are high.
