La Scala is presenting the first week-long presentation of Wagner’s Ring Cycle in decades.
Daniel Barenboim will conduct the cycle, beginning tonight with Das Rheingold. It’s part of La Scala’s year-long celebration of the bicentennial of the births of composers Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi.
The cycle is a co-production of La Scala and the Berlin State Opera. It was performed in its entirety in Berlin this spring. After this week’s performances, the four operas will be re-played next week in Milan.
The last time the Ring was performed in a single week at La Scala was 1938 with conductor Clemens Krauss and the Munich State Opera.
