Another American star is joining the cast of Downton Abbey.

Paul Giamatti will play the free-spirited brother of Lady Grantham in the award-winning British series which airs on Vision TV in Canada. He will make his first appearance on the Christmas episode, along with Shirley MacLaine, who was introduced as Lady Grantham’s mother last season.

46 year old Giamatti won Golden Globe Awards for Barney’s Version and John Adams, which also earned him an Emmy Award. And he won a Toronto Film Critics’ Award for his breakout film, Sideways.

The addition to the cast of a second American star is seen as a reflection of Downton Abbey’s growing popularity in the United States.

Dame Kiri Ti Kanawa will also be part of Downton Abbey’s fourth season.
