Two former South African presidents bound together in the country’s struggle to exit apartheid are both suffering ill health.

While 94 year old Nelson Mandela remains in critical condition in hospital, there is news about the health of Mandela’s 1993 Nobel Peace Prize co-recipient.   F.W. de Klerk will reportedly be fitted with a pacemaker today to help his heart function.  A South African foundation named after 77 year old de Klerk says the former president felt dizzy after returning home Sunday from Europe, and that he had suffered several similar spells of dizziness in recent weeks.

De Klerk and his wife previously announced they were suspending a working visit and vacation in Europe because Nelson Mandela is critically ill.  Mandela has spent 25 days in a Pretoria hospital with a recurring lung infection.  As president, de Klerk freed Mandela from prison.  He was the last leader of apartheid regime and led negotiations with Mandela that ended white racist rule.
