Toronto city council has voted in favour of a subway extension in the city’s east end rather than a previously agreed-to light rail line.
Council approved the subway extension this afternoon in the second day of a two-day debate.
The final vote was 28 to 16 to proceed with the subway extension.
However the project is contingent on provincial and federal funding.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has said he’s willing to raise taxes by 0.25 per cent, starting in 2015, to fund the subway in Scarborough.
But he says he needs all of the 1.8-billion dollars the governing provincial Liberals had originally pledged for a light rail project.
