Toronto City Council has approved a subway for Scarborough.
But it’s not the final word.
The ultimate decision rests with Ottawa and Queen’s Park.
Council voted 28-16 yesterday to build a subway east of the Kennedy subway station, rather than light rail transit.
But the plan is conditional on the province committing the full $1.8-billion promised for light rail transit, and on Ottawa providing half the added costs of going underground. That is expected to be at least another billion.
There has been no response from Ottawa. But Ontario Transportation Minister Glenn Murray has scheduled a news conference for noon today at the Kennedy station. Murray has already said Queen’s Park will only contribute $1.4-billion. He says $400-million has already been spent on the LRT.
