Attending a long theatrical performance can be a challenge for the body and the mind in this day and age.

So New York’s Metropolitan Opera wants to do something about it.

The Met is following several British theatres in installing new ergonomic seat cushions. They’re designed by a British company called Nu Bax, and they tilt the body forward, straightening the spine. That increases blood flow and attention spans.

Nu Bax Chief Executive Ian Moore says the seats “trick your spine into thinking you’re standing up.” That leads to less fidgeting, which is also less distracting to other patrons.

The Met staff normally replace a few hundred seats in the theatre during the off-season. They’ll install the Nu Bax seats in the first seven rows this summer. It will take about a decade to upgrade they entire theatre.
