A Hip replacement is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures.

Now, new Canadian research is offering guidance on how long certain types of hip replacements will last.  A report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information  suggests people who have a type of metal-on-metal hip replacement  have a nearly 6 percent chance of needing another replacement within five years.  People who had the more common metal-on-plastic implant, had a just under 3 per cent chance of needing a replacement.

The research also suggests that patients whose hips were replaced with a metal-on-metal implant were most likely to be male, and younger than age 55.
