Five women, ranging in age from 18 to 61, will try to swim across Lake Ontario lengthwise starting Tuesday morning.

They expect the 305-kilometre relay will take five days of non-stop swimming.

The swim will start in Kingston at 10 a.m. with Burlington the finish line.

They hope to complete the crossing Saturday afternoon.

The women will swim in two-hour shifts, sleeping and eating on sailboats and zodiacs that’ll accompany them.

All are accomplished long-distance solo swimmers.

61-year old Colleen Shields, 47-year old Nicole Mallette, 23-year old Samantha Whiteside, and 18-year old Rebekah Boscariol, have successfully completed the Lake Ontario crossing.

Eighteen-year-old Mona Sharari swam across the English Channel last year.

The solo crossing from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Toronto has been done 58 times; majority of them by women.

The length-wise crossing has never been attempted.

The women hope to raise $300,000 for the charity ”Because I Am A Girl”.
