A new face is coming to England’s  £10 notes.

And it’s a sign that there is plenty of pride – and little prejudice against women  on the country’s currency.

The Bank of England has chosen Jane Austen as the new face of the note.

The new governor -and  former head of the Bank of Canada – Mark Carney – said in a statement : “Jane Austen certainly merits a place in the select group of historical figures to appear on our banknotes. Her novels have an enduring and universal appeal  and she is recognized as one of the greatest writers in English literature.”

Austen was a chronicler of 18th century English country life.

She will replace naturalist Charles Darwin on  the 2016 issue of the banknote.
