The first woman to become music director of a major American orchestra has signed a new contract that will keep her on the podium through 2021.
Marin Alsop began as conductor in Baltimore in 2007, but her appointment was not without controversy. Musicians in the orchestra initially claimed the search process had been rushed. But they have since developed a smooth working relationship that has included several successful visits to Carnegie Hall.
It was Alsop who revived the orchestra’s recording tradition, including a Grammy-nominated version of Bernstein’s Mass in 2009. She also introduced a program for music in inner city schools.
Attendance and financial contributions have increased considerably since her appointment.
In September, Marin Alsop will also become the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms at London’s Albert Hall.
