Pope Francis is praising the importance of the elderly during the Catholic Church’s festival of youth in Brazil.

Francis says grandparents are critical for passing on wisdom, family and religious heritage and are;  “a treasure to be preserved and strengthened”.

According to Statistics Canada there are more than 5-million grandparents in Canada, each with an average of five grandchildren.

Grandparents Day in Canada  falls on the first Sunday after Labour Day.
