One senior staffer at Toronto City Hall says the number of inquiries they’ve received is absolutely fascinating.

The senior adviser with the city’s economic development and culture office was talking about the maple tree that was toppled during last Friday’s storm.

The tree in Leslieville is said to be the one that inspired Alexander Muir to write Canada’s unofficial anthem, The Maple Leaf Forever.

The City has received about 100 inquiries from the public who want the wood for some purpose. Many people have also dropped by the site of the tree to grab pieces of bark and seeds.

City Hall will now determine how best to re-purpose wood from the neighbourhood tree.

It could involve museums, libraries, hospitals and civic buildings.

Some of it may even be used to create a new Speaker’s gavel for city council.
