Parents of elementary school children may notice some changes when they drop their kids off for the first day of school today: added security.

Following the killings in Newtown, Connecticut, at the end of last year, then-premier Dalton McGuinty announced the province would make $10-million available to beef up security at schools in the province.

One hundred fifty elementary schools in Toronto have added locks and cameras so that the only way someone can enter after classes begin is to be buzzed in. The board received just under half a million dollars in provincial money to upgrade security.

The Toronto board has gradually been installing added security in its schools over the past eight years.
