Toronto’s Mayor says even a shorter subway line is still a “huge” victory for the city. And he’s taking credit for it.

Rob Ford made the comment after Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray announced that the city will have to accept a shorter, two-stop extension of the Bloor-Danforth line to Scarborough Town Centre.

Ford says he has campaigned for a Scarborough subway for years. He says everyone was against him: the province, city council, TTC Chair Karen Stintz. But he listened to the people of Scarborough and got them a subway.

But Glen Murray doesn’t think Ford should be so quick to take the credit. He says the subway wouldn’t happen without money from the province. Murray points out that the Ford administration has not contributed anything to the $1.4-billion cost of the extension. He added, “we’re back in a spin cycle of the Fords and the Feds talking but not writing a cheque.”

Ford was pushing for a three-stop line, but Murray says a two-stop extension is the only option affordable with money the province has committed to the project.
