There appears to be more to the story leading up to Peter Shurman’s dismissal as the Progressive Conservative finance critic over a controversial housing allowance.  The Thornhill MPP was ousted from his high profile position on Sunday after P.C. leader Tim Hudak gave Shurman an ultimatum.  “I said to Peter, pay back these expenses, and if you don’t pay back these expenses, you can’t stay as my finance critic.  He made his decision.  I made mine.”

Shurman lives in Niagara-on-the-Lake and collects living expenses for an apartment in Toronto while representing Thornhill.  Now, it’s come to light that Shurman wanted to run in Niagara Falls in the 2011 election, but Hudak urged him to remain in Thornhill to save that seat.   The Toronto Star is reporting that Shurman had hoped to take the Niagara Falls riding from Liberal Kim Craitor.  But four senior P.C. sources say the leader was worried the Liberals would win Thornhill without the popular incumbent and so he pleaded with Shurman to remain there, even though Hudak knew Shurman resided in the Niagara region.  Had Shurman run and won in Niagara, his living expenses would today be a moot point.  Shurman has refused to comment about his removal from the finance critic post.
