The President of the United States is sending his Secretary of State to try to work out a solution to a dispute over Russia’s proposal to strip Syria of its stockpile of chemical weapons.

Barack Obama says John Kerry will try to convince Russia to allow a UN Security Council resolution that would require Syria to surrender those weapons or face military action. Russia is balking at making the proposal binding.

During a televised speech last night, Obama said his nation can’t stand by while another country uses deadly gas on its population. While saying that the US is not the “world’s policeman,” he asked how his country could stand aside while a country gasses its own children.

Obama did promise that he wouldn’t deploy combat troops to Syria or wage a prolonged air campaign.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister is also leery of Syria’s commitment to destroy its chemical weapons. John Baird wonders if the Assad regime can be trusted after “years of deceit.”
