For the past 60 years, the Canadian Cancer Society has provided free transportation to cancer patients who have no other way of getting to their chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  As of October 1st, this will no longer be the case.  A new $100 fee will be imposed by the Ontario division of the Canadian Cancer Society for new patients who register for the society’s transportation service.  Tanya Nixon is the society’s Senior Manager for Transportation. She says demand for the service has grown by nearly 20 percent in recent years, with more than 15,000 patients now getting rides annually.  Nixon says the $100 fee is a one time payment.  The service is offered by volunteers who are paid 30 cents per kilometre.  Cancer society officials say there will be a program to cover the costs on a compassionate basis for those who are unable to pay.
