Imagine receiving a phone call and being told your CT scan or mammogram is being reviewed for a possible error.  This is reality for patients at two area hospitals.  3500 CT scans and mammograms are being scrutinized for potential mistakes made by a single radiologist at Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke and Mississauga Hospital.  The tests were performed between April 1st of last year and March 31st of this year.

Trillium Health Partners says the review was prompted by the work of one radiologist, who no longer works at the two hospitals.  Trillium Health chief of staff Doctor Dante Morra says at least one patient has been misdiagnosed.  Morra stresses, “that the vast majority of the scans are going to be normal and not an issue”, but not for 66 year old William Gavel of Mississauga.  He says he received a letter from Trillium informing him that a CT scan he had done on this lungs in March is being reviewed. He was subsequently diagnosed with lung cancer, which was not picked up in the CT Scan.

Trillium says the review will be expanded if needed, and will be made public once it’s completed.
