It’s an infringement on free speech but an Ontario Superior Court justice has ruled that forcing would-be Canadians to take an oath to the Queen as a condition of citizenship is constitutional.
The ruling comes in response to three permanent residents who argued the requirement violated their rights.
The ruling says that the provision can be justified as a reasonable limit in a free and democratic society.
The federal government argued that the oath to the Queen has been around since Confederation and the applicants are in Canada voluntarily.
