The only known copy of a movie that marked a turning point in the career of silent film star Mary Pickford is being screened at a college in New Hampshire next month, seven years after it was discovered in an old barn.

A contractor found the 1911 film called Their First Misunderstanding while cleaning out the barn that was scheduled for demolition. He donated it to the film department of nearby Keene State College, which has spent the last seven years restoring the film. The Library of Congress has funded the restoration.

Their First Misunderstanding is considered important in Pickford’s career because it was the first one she wrote. It’s also the first one in which her name was mentioned in the advertising.

Mary Pickford was born Gladys Marie Smith in Toronto in 1892. She became known as “America’s Sweetheart,” and helped found United Artists.
