New York’s City Opera may have sung its last aria.

The 70-year-old company gave what may be its final performance on Saturday with a new work. Anna Nicole tells the story of former Playboy Playmate and tabloid favourite Anna Nicole Smith.

The board of the so-called “peoples’ opera company” set today as a deadline for raising seven million dollars to keep operating. They remain far short of the goal, and bankruptcy is the only alternative.

The company that helped start the careers of world-class artists such as Beverly Sills and Placido Domingo has faced mounting deficits for years. It has been forced to cut back its season from 115 performances ten years ago to just 16 last year.
