It’s a big bill for taxpayers here in Ontario.

Ontario Auditor General, auditor Bonnie Lysyk has released a report that finds it will cost Ontario taxpayers 1.1-billion dollars to scrap two gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga.

The plants were cancelled just ahead of five byelections in 2011.

The report finds the premier’s office added 225-million to the total Oakville cost by agreeing to compensate the builder of the plant even though the contract allowed the province to pull out after 24 months at no cost and no penalty.

Lysyk concludes that figure could swell by another 140-million depending on the increased cost of delivering gas to the new plant location in Napanee.

An earlier auditor general’s report put the cost of the Mississauga cancellation at 275-million.
